Assess who is represented in your survey
The CCS Knowledge Map compares the demographic composition of survey respondents with American Community Survey population estimates for a selected place. Use the results to identify possible overrepresentation, underrepresentation, and recruitment gaps.
Use the score as evidence, not a verdict
Representativeness is one dimension of sample quality. Interpret it alongside your sampling strategy, response rate, study purpose, sample size, and knowledge of the community.
How the workflow works

Choose a comma-separated file in which each row represents one survey response.
Map your fields
Match your survey columns to supported geography and demographic fields.
Select a geography
Choose the state, county, Census tract, or ZIP Code Tabulation Area you want to assess.
Generate results
The application retrieves Census benchmarks and compares them with your sample.
What you need
- A CSV export from a survey platform or another data-collection system.
- A location field, such as a complete home address or ZIP code.
- At least one supported demographic field: gender, race and ethnicity, age, or household income.
- Permission to use the data for this analysis and an appropriate plan for protecting participant privacy.
